Die Zahlen für Zitate und Artikel lieferte die Datenbank "Web of Science" des Thomson-Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) in Philadelphia. Stichtag war der 27. September 2004. Die "Köpfe" arbeiteten während des Bewertungszeitraums an einem biologisch-ökologischen Institut, publizierten überwiegend in biologisch-ökologischen Journals oder arbeiteten vorrangig an eindeutig biologisch-ökologischen Projekten. Reviews zählten für die "Köpfe"-Wertung nicht.
