About the project
You will join the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI)-funded COMBINE project within the Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Accelerator. In collaboration with European universities, research institutes and industrial partners from EFPIA and SMEs, you will work towards improvement and harmonization of preclinical models used in AMR research. Moreover, you will work closely with project partners within PEI and the Consortium to help to deliver improved tools for translation of non-clinical data to clinical success, which will help to accelerate the development of novel antibiotics and vaccines against AMR pathogens.

Your responsibilities
  • Review the literature, regulatory guidelines and data, collected or generated by the consortium, on the preclinical development of therapeutic and prophylactic medicines for AMR infections.
  • Develp harmonized, standardized and quality controlled preclinical models in the context of the regulatory framework.
  • Design, perform and analyze in vitro and in vivo (murine infection) models to determine antibacterial activity/efficacy.
  • Develop consensus protocols and a repository of pre-qualified bacterial strains and anti-infective compounds with the aim of generating a quality control tool-kit for preclinical murine infection models.
  • Leverage your excellent skills in animal models, microbiology and immunology to contribute to the consortium’s mission, complementary projects ( and the overall research theme of the Division of Microbiology.
  • Disseminate research by publication of reviews, papers or talks and posters at conferences.
Our requirements
  • State examination, Master’s or equivalent degree in veterinary medicine or a life sciences subject
  • Doctorate (PhD, Dr. med. vet. or equivalent)
  • Subject matter expertise and technical laboratory skills in immunology, microbiology, animal physiology and molecular biology
  • Extensive hands-on experience with in vivo rodent models
  • Strong English communication, presentation and scientific writing skills (German language skills are a plus)
  • Interest to work in a multi-faceted consortium at the interface of experimental microbiology/immunology and regulatory science
  • Experience with mouse infection models, including pulmonary-, UTI- and thigh-infection models with Gram-negative (ESKAPE) pathogens
  • FELASA Function A (FELASA B), PIL, or equivalent accredited animal experimentation course certificate
  • Experience in the generation, interpretation and statistical analysis of in vitro and in vivo preclinical efficacy and PK/PD data for anti-infectives (antibiotics, antibodies, phages and vaccines)
  • Knowledge of regulatory guidelines governing anti-infectives development
  • Demonstrated ability to innovate and drive technological advancement in the lab
  • Experience in writing manuscripts and study reports
  • At least one first-author paper in a peer-reviewed journal

The successful candidate will be employed on a 2-year fixed-term contract with the possibility of extension to approximately 5 years, if the intermediate evaluation is positive. Part-time working is possible in principle. The payband is E 14 TVöD (Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst, Collective Bargaining Agreement for the Public Service), Part III No. 12 of Annex 1 of TVEntgO Bund (Tarifvertrag über die Entgeltordnung des Bundes, Collective Bargaining Agreement for the Pay System of the Federal German Public Service). The assignment to a payband is made based on the consideration of your individual professional experience.
