Ende letzten Jahres war Paul Nurse, Medizin-Nobelpreisträger 2001, dran. Auf die Frage, was seiner Meinung nach der Schlüssel zu seiner erfolgreichen Forscherkarriere gewesen sei, antwortete er, dass er bereits sehr früh die Entscheidung traf, ein „Big Problem“ verfolgen zu wollen — nämlich zu verstehen, wie Zellen sich teilen:
I realised that science was difficult and it often failed and if you were going to carry out a career like that you at least had to tackle a big problem. […] And so I thought it would be a very fundamental problem to understand how cells reproduce themselves and that’s the problem I set myself as a PhD which also didn’t go brilliantly, quite frankly, but it was a very, very strategic decision.
