Gerade stolperten wir (hier) mal wieder über diesen „Klassiker“ aus dem 50 Jahre alten Artikel „Is the scientific paper fraudulent?“ des britischen Immunologen und Nobelpresiträgers Peter Medawar:
The scientific paper is a fraud in the sense that it does give a totally misleading narrative of the processes of thought that go into the making of scientific discoveries.
Gilt heute vielleicht sogar mehr denn je…

Ein Klassiker hatte gerade zehnjähriges Jubiläum: In seiner Oktoberausgabe 2000 bewies das Journal of Systems and Software enormen Humor und druckte auf Seite 1 „A letter from the frustrated author of a journal paper „. Großartig! Das Ganze geht los mit:
Dear Sir, Madame, or Other:
Enclosed is our latest version of Ms. #1996-02-22-RRRRR, that is the re-re-re-revised revision of our paper. Choke on it. We have again rewritten the entire manuscript from start to finish. We even changed the g-d-running head! Hopefully, we have suffered enough now to satisfy even you and the bloodthirsty reviewers.
Und dann geht’s richtig zur Sache. Noch ein Beispiel:
Still, from this batch of reviewers, C was clearly the most hostile, and we request that you not ask him to review this revision. Indeed, we have mailed letter bombs to four or five people we suspected of being reviewer C, so if you send the manuscript back to them, the review process could be unduly delayed.
Wie gesagt, ein Klassiker! Allerdings einer, der in der deutschsprachigen Life Science-Szene kaum bekannt scheint. Das wollen wir nun ändern. Bei Elsevier muss man für die Originalveröffentlichung aus dem Journal of Systems und Software zwar zahlen, aber den ganzen Text gibt’s noch mannigfach woanders im Web — etwa hier, oder hier.
Viel Spaß! Aber Vorsicht, Betroffenen könnte das Lachen im Hals stecken bleiben.
