Der schottische Molekular-Paläontologe Ross Barnett stellt per Twitter fest:

Brilliant! More papers should have figures like this!…

… und meint diese Abbildung (Draufklicken vergrößert):

Der Comic erscheint als „Figure 7“ im Paper „Nina G. Jablonski, Ji Xueping, Liu Hong, Li Zheng, Lawrence J. Flynn, Li Zhicai; Remains of Holocene giant pandas from Jiangdong Mountain (Yunnan, China) and their relevance to the evolution of quaternary environments in south-western China (Historical Biology 24(5): 527-536)“ — und beschreibt ein Szenario, wie einstmals Riesenpanda-Knochen zu einem bestimmten Ort tief unter der Erde gekommen sein könnten.

Allerdings scheinen die Autoren der Aussagekraft ihres Comics dennoch nicht vollständig zu trauen. Denn im Text beschreiben sie das Szenario nochmals folgendermaßen:

The unsuspecting giant panda fell into the sinkhole and died immediately upon hitting the rocky floor of the upper chamber. The giant panda partly decomposed there. The evidence of rodent gnawing on the distal forelimb and hindlimb bones indicates that decomposition of the distal extremities occurred in the upper chamber and that the exposed bones were subjected to rodent attack there. It is highly unlikely that live rodents could have reached the lower chamber to undertake this activity. While the skeleton was still partly held together by soft tissue, storm water from the surface entered the shaft and washed over the floor of the upper chamber. This flooding event carried the remains of the giant panda downward, to the second shaft. Most of the remains finally came to rest at the level of the lower chamber at 80 m, where the maceration process continued, in the absence of rodent activity.

Dennoch eine nette Idee, der Comic. Danke an Gutachter und Editoren, dass sie ihn nicht humorlos gestrichen haben.
